Principal’s Message – Term 3

We’ve returned to a very wet start to Term 3! While it’s always challenging when our students can’t get outside, they have coped remarkably well. A big thank you to our staff for providing alternative, fun activities to keep everyone engaged during the rainy days.

Staff Development Day
This term began with our Staff Development Day, which was both inspiring and thought-provoking.

• Jayelan’s Presentation – We were privileged to hear from Jayelan, a non-speaking student and strong advocate for not judging a book by its cover. Jayelan encouraged us to focus on the unique strengths of each student, reigniting our passion for the important work we do at WESC.
• Cultural Responsiveness with Sharon Wood Kenney – Sharon shared the history of Aboriginal people and led us in creating sensory bags with healing and calming properties.
• Sensory Processing with Laura (OT) – Laura provided valuable insight into sensory processing and strategies to accommodate the varied needs our students display each day.

Student Opportunities & Celebrations

• Ballet Lessons – Two of our classes began their ballet program, running all term. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore body movement and dance.
• NAIDOC Day & Bush Tucker Garden – In Week 2, we celebrated NAIDOC Day by engaging in language lessons followed by planting a bush tucker garden.
• National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day – Week 3 was another important celebration, recognising the strengths and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
• Perth Wildcats Basketball Competition – In Week 4, a group of our students represented WESC with pride, remaining undefeated in the competition. Congratulations to our superstars!

  Next week we will roll out the Compass Parent Portal. Through this, you’ll be able to:
• Access your child’s progress reports
• View up-to-date class and school attendance information
• Approve or enter absences
• Update your contact details
• Access information about upcoming events
• Year 6 Transitions
  We are busy supporting our Year 6 students as they prepare for high school in 2026. If you have not yet received an enrolment offer and I have not spoken with you, please contact me urgently.
• Faction Carnival – PP to Year 6
  Our Faction Carnival is just around the corner! Please speak with your child’s class teacher to find out which events they’ll be participating in.

It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting term at WESC, filled with opportunities for our students to learn, connect, and shine. Thank you for your ongoing support.

To represent the wildflowers (Djet Malkakoom) that cover the country during the Kambarang Season.

During the transition from Djilba to Kambarang Season, the weather rises in temperature with increasingly warm to hot dry days and less cold fronts coming from the coast. Wildflowers Djet Malkakoom, flower this time of year and an abundance of colour is displayed across country boodja.

With the weather warming, reptiles such as Karda (Goanna), Noorn (dugite), Wakarl (Carpet Snake), Nornt (Tiger Snake) and Yoorn (Bobtail) emerge from their Seasonal hibernation looking for food and a warm place to reproduce.  

The Koolbardi (Magpie) are noticeably protective of their newly born offspring and bush animals that rely on the receding fresh water sources could be found by traditional hunters who sustainably collected waterfowl eggs, frogs, tortoises and marron. Traditionally, people would also move closer towards coastal areas, catching fish, crabs and shellfish to supplement their diet, where the whale migration along the Western Australian coastline is occurring.

News from Kambarang 8

It’s been a fantastic start to Term 3 in K8, with plenty of learning, laughter, and exciting new experiences!

Last term, we had a lovely excursion to the park where we enjoyed eating our lunch outdoors and spotting signs of the changing seasons. We talked about things like falling leaves, cooler weather, and how nature changes throughout the year. After lunch, we had a great time playing in the playground with other classes—climbing, sliding, and swinging on the swings. It was a fun and active day enjoyed by everyone as seen in the photos below.

In Literacy, we’ve been working hard on learning our sounds and letters. We are beginning to blend these sounds together to make words, and it’s been wonderful to see everyone growing in confidence and enjoying their reading and writing journeys.

In Maths, we’ve been exploring the concept of location. Through fun and interactive group activities, we’ve been moving and placing objects around the room, helping us understand terms like next to, in front of, and behind. These lessons have been full of energy and enthusiasm!

During our HASS lessons, we are preparing to dive into the past by looking at old photos and toys. We’ll be comparing how things have changed over time and learning about what life was like for children many years ago. We can’t wait to discover more!

In Health, we’ve been focusing on our feelings, as well as how to share and build friendships. We’ve had thoughtful discussions and engaging activities to help us better understand ourselves and others.

In Talk for Writing, we recently finished exploring A Monster’s Surprise. The students had a wonderful time retelling the story using AUSLAN signs for key words, and they especially enjoyed learning the actions that brought the story to life. Our play corner was transformed into a cozy cave—just like in the book—which made for some imaginative play, and we even had our own class tea party, just like the characters! We’re now diving into The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and the children are showing even more excitement as they learn the story through actions, repetition, and interactive play. It’s been fantastic to see their engagement grow with each new tale!

It’s been a fun-filled and busy start to the term in K8, and we’re so proud of all the learning and growing happening in our classroom. We’re excited to see what the rest of Term 3 has in store!
