Principal’s Message – End of Term 2
As we come to the end of Term 2, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful progress achieved by all of our students across the school. I have had the pleasure of reading every student’s report, and I have to say the growth over the past six months is a testament to their hard work, resilience and determination.
I would also like to recognise the dedication and commitment of our staff. I am so proud of the high standard they maintain, and of their shared belief that every student has the ability to learn and achieve progress in their own way.
Student reports are scheduled to be emailed home on Wednesday 2 July 2025. If you would prefer a printed copy, please let your class teacher or Trish in the front office know.
Next week, we look forward to ending the term with our PBS Whole School Celebration. We will be celebrating our success with a PJ Disco on Thursday 3 July 2025. Families are warmly invited to come along and have a dance with the children from 2:20pm.
Looking ahead to Term 3, we have an exciting calendar planned. Bunuru and Birak classes will be participating in the WA Ballet dance program, and we’ll be hosting both our school sports carnival and early childhood sports carnival. This year, Westminster ESC will proudly host the senior interschool carnival, which will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school. We will also be celebrating NAIDOC Week and Book Week, just to name a few highlights.
I hope you all have a safe and restful holiday break and find time for some family adventures, rest and recuperation.
Term 3 begins on Tuesday 22 July 2025.
Warm regards,
Carmen Lopez
Djilba Season
SECOND RAIN
SEASON OF CONCEPTION
AUGUST & SEPTEMBER
COLOUR – ORANGE
To represent spiritual connection to the land (boodja) through the warmth of karl (fire),ngardanginy (hunting practices) and the preparation of the land for growth and transition into the flowering Season of Kambarang.
Djilba is welcomed by the bright yellow flower of many Acacia varieties. The weather is cold and birds are taking shelter from the sudden showers, then busy themselves with nest preparation during the mild sunny days. Food is abundant and animals begin pairing to prepare for offspring. Yonga (Kangaroos) and weitj (Emus) are taking advantage of the new growth and venture further inland as water sources are replenished and food is in abundant supply.
As we progress though the Season and the weather warms, we can expect protective koolbardi (magpies) to guard their nest area by swooping upon uninvited guests, the djidi djidi (willy wagtail) dances to distract and chase larger birds and predators away with a swoop and loud clicking sound. The brushtail possum sometimes takes bird eggs for protein and is relentlessly chased away by the djidi djidi. Nearing the end of the Season, the grass tree (balga) will grow magnificent flower stalks and the yellow-green large cone flowers of the poolgarla (bull banksia - banksia grandis) can be seen. Traditionally, the cones were used to start campfires (karla) and were also useful for transporting the hot fire coals to a new location.

News from Kambarang 7
📚 Kambarang 7 Highlights – Fun, Learning & Friendship!
It’s been a busy and exciting Term 2! Students in Kambarang 7 have been settling in beautifully making new friends, building routines, and diving into learning with enthusiasm.
🔤 Literacy
This term, we’ve been focusing on the skills of blending and segmenting words to support reading development. Students have been learning how to break down words into individual sounds (segmenting) and put sounds together to read whole words (blending). The students are becoming more confident readers. They've been applying their knowledge during shared reading sessions, guided reading groups, and even in their independent reading time. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm grow as they recognise more high-frequency words and tackle new vocabulary with pride.
➗ Maths
This term in Mathematics, we explored statistics and data collection. Students enjoyed organizing information, and interpreting results—real-life math in action! They then sorted their data into categories and displayed it using pictographs, tally charts, and column graphs.
Through hands-on activities and group work, students explored how data helps us understand the world around us. Whether counting favourite fruits, types of pets, or modes of transport to school, they were engaged in real-life math that felt both fun and relevant. Interpreting the results also helped strengthen their critical thinking skills as they looked for patterns and drew conclusions from the data they collected.
🌏 HASS
This term in HASS, we travelled back in time to learn about communication in the past. We created our own cave paintings and explored how the mail system has evolved. The hands-on projects were a huge hit!
📖 Talk for Writing
We completed our unit on Jack and the Beanstalk, with everyone loving the phrase:
“Fee fi fo fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!”
Now we’re working on How to Trap a Dragon—students have been busy innovating and creating their own exciting instructions and imaginative traps.
💬 Health & Social Learning
We explored how to make healthy and unhealthy choices in our daily lives. Through class discussions, sorting activities, and role-playing, students learned about nutritious foods, the importance of hygiene, getting enough sleep, and staying active. We talked about how these choices impact our bodies and minds, helping students to understand the value of a balanced lifestyle.
To support our social and emotional learning, we also had regular play sessions with Kambarang 6 on a Wednesday afternoon. These sessions gave students the chance to build new friendships, practice cooperative play, and engage in sensory-based activities. Whether they were exploring textures, or participating in group games, students developed important social skills in a fun and supportive environment.
It’s been a fantastic term filled with learning, creativity, and connection. We’re proud of our students and look forward to more adventures in Term 3!!
